Alcohol Addiction Treatment Center

Everything You Need to Know About Alcohol Treatment

What Is Alcohol Treatment?

Alcohol addiction, like other substance use disorders, can be treated a number of ways. The most thorough type of alcohol addiction treatment, sometimes known as alcohol rehab, is completed at an inpatient setting. The first stage of treatment is detox. During detoxification, the medical personnel at the alcohol treatment center will prescribe medication and clinical interventions that help to ease withdrawal symptoms and safely remove the alcohol from a patient’s body. Detoxing from alcohol can produce a range of dangerous symptoms, which is why close medical supervision is necessary during this phase.

Once a patient has been safely detoxed from alcohol, they continue receiving treatment geared toward addressing mental health conditions that may contribute to a patients drinking or drug use. This kind of therapy that treats both substance abuse and mental health disorders is called dual diagnosis treatment. At 1 Solution Detox, our treatment programs are designed to promote healing for our clients and their family members, and to build a foundation in recovery that will prevent relapse. Some of the treatments our clients benefit from include:

  • Individual counseling with a licensed therapist
  • Behavioral therapies like CBT and DBT
  • Group therapy moderated by addiction experts
  • Family therapy mediated by psychologists
  • Medication management overseen by addiction psychiatrists
  • Participation in support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous

Outpatient Alcohol Treatment

After successfully completing inpatient treatment, many patients continue their care by enrolling in outpatient treatment. At most treatment facilities, outpatient programs are an extension of the therapies used and skills taught during residential or partial hospitalization programs (PHP). Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) are designed to help clients who have just completed a partial or residential treatment program get help in their everyday life. These programs are largely focused on assisting clients in becoming self-sufficient in the community.

Clients participate in a variety of individual and group therapy sessions focused on improving or recovering social skills, independent living abilities, and practical life management skills. Ultimately, the goal is to better support their psychological, physical, and social health. Intensive outpatient programs usually meet several days per week for several hours per session. In this way, IOP programs provide the highest level of outpatient care aside from partial hospitalization programs (PHP).

Is There a Cure For Alcohol Addiction?

There is no real “cure” for alcohol addiction. However, if you are addicted to alcohol and want to stop drinking, seeking professional help from a rehab center or an organization like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) can help to overcome alcoholism. It’s important to realize that alcoholism is a disease which affects the brain – it has nothing to do with a person’s character. So if you have decided to give up drinking, it doesn’t mean that you have become weak or lack discipline. On the contrary, it will help you gain control over your emotions and lead a healthy life without abusing alcohol.

There is no single cure for alcohol addiction because it is caused by multiple factors. The causes of alcoholism include genetic predisposition, childhood trauma, environmental factors, and the use of alcohol as a coping mechanism. Alcohol addiction treatment may involve behavioral therapy (such as cognitive-behavioral therapy), motivational enhancement, or medications like disulfiram (Antabuse) to reduce cravings for alcohol. There are also inpatient and outpatient programs that provide intensive counseling services in order to address any underlying issues that contribute to the development of an addiction.

Can an Employer Require Alcohol Treatment?

An employer cannot require alcohol treatment. However, if alcoholism has negatively impacted an employee’s work performance, the employer may offer that employee the opportunity to seek help as an alternative to being terminated.

An employer can make accommodations for an employee who is struggling with alcoholism or addiction to substances like cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamine.

These accommodations include:

  • Providing a work environment that is free of drugs and alcohol
  • Offering help to the employee in finding substance abuse treatment
  • Assisting the employee in obtaining transportation or child care during substance abuse treatment appointments
  • Placing the employee on unpaid leave while he/she attends substance abuse treatment programs.

Is Alcohol Treatment Covered By Insurance?

Alcohol treatment is covered by most insurance plans. If you have a medical condition, it is important to discuss your options with your doctor or health care provider.

If you do not have a medical condition and are struggling with alcoholism, we recommend finding a rehabilitation center near you. There are many centers that offer free and low-cost programs to help people recover from addiction. If you are unsure about whether your particular health insurance plan will cover the cost of treatment, feel free to reach out to our admissions team for a free no-obligation insurance verification. Even if you are not sure that you are ready to get help, it is always good to be aware of your options.

Where to Get Alcohol Treatment Without Insurance

If you do not have insurance, there are still alcoholism treatment options available to you. The first option is to pay out-of-pocket to receive care at a private rehab facility. Depending on your financial position, and the level of care, some facilities will allow payment plans and other assisted options. Additionally, many state-funded treatment centers can accept patients without insurance for little to no cost. You can find a list of state-funded treatment centers in your area by contacting the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Is Alcohol Treatment Covered Under FMLA?

The short answer is yes, alcohol treatment is covered under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The following quote on the subject is from the United States Department of Labor:

“Treatment for substance abuse may be a serious health condition if the conditions for inpatient care and/or continuing treatment are met.

FMLA leave may only be taken for substance abuse treatment provided by a health care provider or by a provider of health care services on referral by a health care provider. Absence because of the employee’s use of the substance, rather than for treatment, does not qualify for FMLA leave.

The employer may not take action against the employee because the employee has exercised his or her right to take FMLA leave for substance abuse treatment. However, if the employer has an established policy, applied in a non-discriminatory manner, that has been communicated to all employees, and that provides under certain circumstances an employee may be terminated for substance abuse, then pursuant to that policy the employee may be terminated regardless of whether he or she is presently taking FMLA leave.”

An employee may also take FMLA leave to care for a covered family member who is receiving treatment for substance abuse. The employer may not take action against an employee who is providing care for a covered family member receiving treatment for substance abuse.

What Is Alcohol Treatment Like?

Your experience in treatment will vary widely depending on what rehab program you attend. Some alcohol rehab centers, particulary those that are state-funded or operated by a larger hospital or healthcare network, operate similarly to a psychiatric ward. These are typically “lockdown” facilities where you are required to stay within the confines of the treatment center for the duration of your treatment. In many of these facilities, patients are not even permitted to smoke cigarettes or wear their own clothes, instead assigning scrubs or hospital gowns.

At 1 Solution Detox, treatment is more like a summer camp environment, but with therapy and medical supervision. Our clients are housed in semi-private or private rooms with luxury bedding and individual entertainment systems. Each client receives one-on-one therapy and participates in group therpy and other recovery-oriented activites. Clients receive catered meals 3 times per day, but have access to a kitchen stocked with snacks 24/7. Additionally, our staff can happily accomodate patients with special dietary restrictions. In addition to standard alcohol treatment therapies, healing massages, vitamin regimens, acupuncture, and yoga are offered. And when clients are not in therpy, participating in groups/meetings, or socializing with their fellows, they can pass the time with recreational games and activities including movies, video games, ping-pong, baggo, and more.
