Everything You Need to Know About Cocaine Abuse & Getting Help For Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine Abuse & Addiction

Cocaine addiction can be a serious and debilitating problem, especially for people who use the drug in combination with other substances. Addiction is an insidious disease that can strike anyone at any time, regardless of socioeconomic status or level of education. And the effects of cocaine addiction do not disappear over time; it can take years to recover from its hold on your life. To overcome cocaine addiction, you need to know what it is, how it affects you, the risks involved, and how what kind of treatment options are available.

Cocaine is a potent and highly addictive stimulant drug that produces euphoria, increased alertness, energy, and feelings of power. It was originally used as an appetite suppressant and nasal decongestant in South America. Nowadays, it is a drug that is used both medically and recreationally. It is often snorted, injected into the veins, or freebased as crack.

The short-term effects of cocaine include an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, dilated pupils, increased body temperature, increased urination and sweating, loss of appetite, dry mouth and nose, numbness of the face or extremities on one side of the body (the “sniffing” side), nausea or vomiting, dizziness or lightheadedness upon standing up quickly from a sitting or lying position.

What are the Side Effects of Cocaine?

Behavioral side effects of cocaine use include depression and addiction. But cocaine use has physical consequences as well.

These physical side effects include:

  • A higher risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • An increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Tolerance and addiction.
  • Increases in blood pressure, body temperature, and heart rate.
  • Increased respiration rates (causing the person to breathe faster).

Cocaine Use & Mental Health

How does cocaine affect mental health? Cocaine is a powerful stimulant that can alter your brain chemistry and distort your perceptions. It can trigger anxiety, paranoia, depression, and aggression. Cocaine can also make you act impulsively, putting you at risk for serious consequences.

Mixing Cocaine With Alcohol & Other Drugs

Mixing drugs and alcohol with cocaine is very dangerous. Some of the dangers of mixing drugs and alcohol with cocaine are:

  • Mixing drugs and alcohol with cocaine can cause a person to have an overdose on the drug, which can lead to death.
  • Mixing drugs and alcohol with cocaine can increase the chance of experiencing a seizure, stroke, or heart attack from the drug.
  • Mixing drugs and alcohol with cocaine may increase the chance of engaging in unsafe behaviors.

What Is Cocaine Overdose?

Cocaine overdose can happen when someone ingests too much cocaine in a short period of time. This is because the stimulant affects the brain’s dopamine levels, causing an increase in blood pressure and heart rate.

Cocaine overdose usually occurs when people take large amounts of cocaine or snort it. Cocaine overdose can also occur if you crush up your cocaine and then swallow it.

An even more dangerous way to consume cocaine is to inject it into your veins directly, which causes very high blood pressure that can lead to stroke or heart attack.

Consuming large quantities of cocaine can also result in anaphylactic shock. This is a severe allergic reaction that can cause a person to have a heart attack or stroke.

Cocaine Withdrawal Symptons

What happens when you withdraw from cocaine use? Withdrawal symptoms are often used to describe the physical and psychological effects of drug addiction. These symptoms typically vary depending on the substance abused. Cocaine withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Restlessness
  • Depression
  • Weight loss
  • Increased appetite and cravings for sweets and fatty foods
  • Difficulty concentrating and thinking clearly
  • Difficulty sleeping and fatigue
  • Sexual dysfunction, including an inability to achieve or maintain an erection or achieve orgasm
  • Increased blood pressure and heart rate, along with increased sweating

Treatment Options For Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine addiction treatment options include a variety of different types of treatment programs, from those that are less intrusive to those that are more intensive. Some programs provide treatment on an outpatient basis, while others require admission into a residential treatment center in a clincal setting. Most programs focus on some combination of counseling, group therapy, residential treatment, and medication.

Cocaine rehab centers are an additional resource that help people who are addicted to cocaine and other drugs. These rehabilitation centers provide people with the tools and the help they need to overcome their addiction. Rehabilitation can involve a number of different treatment programs, such as counseling, detoxification, and relapse prevention.

Many people don’t know how residential treatment works. In residential treatment, a person with a cocaine addiction will be under the care of a trained professional. The professional will determine the best way to treat the addiction. Residential treatment is an effective way to treat cocaine addiction because it involves changing behavior and lifestyle. To add on, residential treatment programs are often more effective than outpatient treatments, which allow individuals to maintain their daily lives during treatment. A person addicted to cocaine needs to change their lifestyle and behavior. Residential treatment gives the individual a safe place to live and learn new skills that can help them recover from their addiction.

At 1 Solution Detox, our residential treatment center provides patients with 24/7 access to medical and clinical professionals who can help them through the difficulties of early recovery. Psychiatric professionals can manage a patient’s medication regimen when necessary, and make adjustments within the safety of a clinical setting. This inpatient level of care is also advisable if a patient is combining cocaine with other drugs or alcohol and may experience symptoms of detox.

Addiction Counseling

Counseling for cocaine addiction is another treatment option that can help to overcome the addiction, and can bring about positive changes in the addict’s life. Furthermore, counseling can help an individual identify his or her triggers, and find new coping mechanisms. Through counseling, an individual may find healthy ways to live life, so that they can focus on other things instead of cocaine and drugs. Addiction counseling is a component of inpatient treatment programs, but can also be done at an outpatient level by a private practitioner.

Group Therapy

Group therapy for cocaine addiction is one of the best ways to treat cocaine addiction. It helps patients in understanding their addiction and making them realize that it is not their fault. Through this process, patients are able to come out of their denial and accept that they have a problem. They are able to understand that there is no reason for them to continue with their habit. This helps them make a decision to get help. Like counseling, group therapy is a component of inpatient treatment but can also be found in outpatient programs.

Addiction Medication

There are different medications available for cocaine addiction. These medications work by affecting the dopamine receptors in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for the reward and pleasure associated with activities such as eating, sex, gambling, and using drugs. The medication can be used alone or in combination with counseling and other forms of therapy. Some of the medications used for cocaine addiction include: buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone.

Cocaine Anonymous

Like Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship where those who wish to recover from their addictions meet and help one another. The program of Cocaine Anonymous is identical to the program of Alcoholics Anonymous, but these groups tend to be more liberal when it comes to discussing the specifics of drug addiction. Those who feel that Alcoholics Anonymous is not the right fit, but still want a community of support, may find Cocaine Anonymous meetings more inviting and less intimidating.

What Is It Like In An Addiction Treatment Center?

Your experience in treatment will vary widely depending on what rehab program you attend. Some addiction treatment centers, particulary those that are state-funded or operated by a larger hospital or healthcare network, operate similarly to a psychiatric ward. These are typically “lockdown” facilities where you are required to stay within the confines of the treatment center for the duration of your treatment. In many of these facilities, patients are not even permitted to smoke cigarettes or wear their own clothes, instead assigning scrubs or hospital gowns.

At 1 Solution Detox, treatment is more like a summer camp environment, but with therapy and medical supervision. Our clients are housed in semi-private or private rooms with luxury bedding and individual entertainment systems. Each client receives one-on-one therapy and participates in group therpy and other recovery-oriented activites. Clients receive catered meals 3 times per day, but have access to a kitchen stocked with snacks 24/7. Additionally, our staff can happily accomodate patients with special dietary restrictions. In addition to standard alcohol treatment therapies, healing massages, vitamin regimens, acupuncture, and yoga are offered. And when clients are not in therpy, participating in groups/meetings, or socializing with their fellows, they can pass the time with recreational games and activities including movies, video games, ping-pong, baggo, and more.
